THE MIST
THE MIST (STEPHEN KING'S THE MIST) (2007)
US
Directed by Frank Darabont
CAST:
Thomas Jane - David Drayton
Marcia Gay Harden - Mrs. Carmody
Laurie Holden - Amanda Dunfrey
PLOT:
A military experiment goes wrong and unleashes creatures upon a small town where a group of people hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives from the monsters outside, as well as from the inside.
REVIEW:
Last year I was going to review this but my copy of the film wouldn't play in my DVD player so I decided to wait till this year. With that I was able to get the black and white version of the film which director Frank Darabont wanted to put out but the studios said no to. Well, now that I have the black and white version and the Darabont's true vision of the film how can I not review it this month in honor of H.P. Lovecraft's birthday.
As a word of warning, there will be spoilers in this review. You have been warned!
I have to start out by talking about the actors, like that's any surprise, because it will be easier to do the rest of the review after I put my thoughts down about the acting. Thomas Jane for the most part did a great job as famous artist David Drayton. Jane though has the distinction of being the actor that overplayed his role as well, with one scene sticking out the most as the shining example of this. The scene is at the end of the film after he's the only surviving member of his group and as he lets out a scream, it's just off. It just seems like Jane was trying to hard to show despair. Once was forgivable, yet it happens again at the very end of the film as well and it brings you out of the film. Thankfully this was at the end so it's not as bad as if it happened half way through. The one stand out performance in the film is from Marcia Gay Harden as Mrs. Carmody. If there was ever a villain created in literature or film that you as the viewer truly hate, it is this character. Harden knows just the right way to put her lines or how to phrase a sentence to bring her character to life in ways that is horrendous yet at the same time all too human.
Albeit The Mist is a monster film, this aspect of it takes a back seat to the drama and dilemmas that happen concerning the characters because of them though. It can be said this is a character study more than anything else and a powerful one at that, one that runs through most of Stephen Kings novels. As in what happens when you put ordinary people in situations that are out of the ordinary. The Mist does this amazingly as it shows the worst in people and what they are capable of once their set sanity is besieged. What comes as no surprise is that some people will use this to further their own personnel beliefs no matter who it hurts. Yet there will be people who try to keep doing what is right no matter what and how the two factions will always be in conflict. The factions that form around David Drayton and Mrs. Carmody are the perfect examples of this as Mrs. Carmody keeps using religion as a reason for everything that is going on and that everyone should follow the Bible and everything it says to protect them. Even when her zealousness infects others and makes all of her believers that follow her sayings into a cult of Jim Jones or Charles Manson like proportions, including killing in the name of God and using fear to induce terror, they see nothing wrong with what they are doing. This comes as a shock to those that are more level headed as they are able to see and view the oncoming destruction from this as the group that forms around David Drayton does and their struggle to escape a situation worse than what is happening out in the world.
Director Frank Darabont does an amazing job creating a film that pulls no punches and doesn't go for the happy go lucky ending most films in the genre go for. He understands that good doesn't always win out, and all to often those that are evil will get the upper hand and keep it. Darabont uses the the setting of the film, a town surrounded by mist to his advantage. An example of this is when the bigger creatures show up they are shrouded in mist which in return has the viewer fill in the missing pieces with their imagination which is always worse than what can be shown on screen as I mentioned before in another review. The creatures that are shown are creepy and disgusting thanks to their design and what it most unsettling about them is that they have eyes that are black pinpoints, which shows that they are behaving as animals do, which is to mate and eat. They are animalistic in the truest sense, brutal, efficient, and have no reasoning capability whatsoever. The Mist got a lot of hate for the ending of the film, but I for one loved how it ended as it shows that every choice made always has a consequence from the small to the unfortunate. More than anything else the film shows that the thing to be most afraid of is the human animal as everything else compared to it seems lite in its wake.
BEST DEATH:
Well, she did want blood for her God!
BEST LINE:
As a species we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion?
FUN FACTS:
In addition to the Gunslinger painting at the beginning of the film, the movie shares another connection with other Stephen King works. The line, "My life for you", spoken by Mrs. Carmody in the film, (although not in the novella), originally appeared in the novel, The Stand, as spoken by Donald Merwin Elbert, (the Trashcan Man), first in his dreams, and then later in person, to Randall Flagg, (the Dark Man or the Walkin' Dude). The line later appeared as dialogue between other villainous characters and subsequent incarnations of Randall Flagg, such as Walter o'Dim in the Dark Tower series novels, and Flagg, in The Eyes of the Dragon.
Frank Darabont agreed to make the film with Dimension only under the condition that no matter what, they wouldn't change the scripted ending. They agreed.
Amanda has an empty six-shot revolver and two full speed-loaders in her purse. This means there are twelve rounds of ammunition for the revolver. During the course of the movie, exactly twelve rounds are fired before the revolver is out of ammunition.
According to Cinefex magazine, there is a favorite scene near the end of the book that was not in the script. In the scene, David Dreyton and the others with him in the vehicle, witness something. Darabont originally had excised this scene from his script. However, several of the people working with the special effects company CafeFX, convinced him to put it back into the film.Which I'm happy Darabont did put it back in.

NEWS ROUNDUP Ver. 14
NEWS ROUNDUP Ver. 14
THE SHINING
With the sequel to the book, Doctor Sleep coming out in January, some one in Hollywood has the bright idea to make a prequel. And yes, that was sarcasm coming from my fingertips. So anyway, the prequel will focus on Jack Torrence's life before he and his family get to the Outlook Hotel. Hmmm......I believe he was drunk and somewhat violent with his family.
HANNIBAL
Those that have my updates know that Hannibal is one of the shows I've been looking forward to in the fall. Well now, another cast member has joined the crew. Laurence Fishburne joins as FBI profiling chief Jack Crawford, who was played by Scott Glenn in Silence of the Lambs. I have to say this series just got even more watchable to me now.
THE HOBBIT
I love Peter Jackson as a director, yet I cannot get around the fact that he is making The Hobbit a trilogy now. I can easily see the film being able to fill two films. The rumor has it that the third film is going to be filled with stuff from the appendixes from the end of Return of the King. The only one that could actually be used for film would be from Appendix B, anything else would be really boring. And yes, I am pissed about this. I think we can all agree this is just a ruling from the studio to try and make more money.
GRIMM
And the start of the fall television season is fast approaching and the first show to start is the return of Grimm on August 13th.
SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D
The first Silent Hill film came out in 2006 to less than positive reception. I myself went and saw it in theaters and own it on DVD and still like the film. It was dark, weird, and creepy and I cannot wait to see the sequel. To help get you ready the full first trailer is out and you can check it out below. Enjoy!

CARRIE
The first promo photos of the remake starring Chloe Grace Moretz in the title role and Julianne Moore as Carrie's mother Margaret White have been released. Now I'm not sure how the remake will play out, but if they try to make it PG-13 it just won't work. The movie is currently filming.
DEXTER
It's official, the cable series on Showtime, Dexter, will end it's run in 2013.
HIGHLANDER
The always in production hell remake/be-boot has found its Conner MacLeod and it appears to be, Ryan Reynolds? Hmm......not my first choice to play a Highland Scot. Yet supposedly Highlander has a new director attached to it as well now, and that being Juan Carlos Fresnadillo who directed 28 Weeks Later.
STARSHIP TROOPERS
It looks like there is going to be a remake/re-boot of the Robert A. Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel as well. It is being produced by Tobe Jaffe, who is also producing the Total Recall remake. Jaffe in a recent interview has said that the movie will be more in line with the book than the ultra violent 90's version of the movie. So don't expect to see scenes like the above in the remake. The reason why the first one did so well was because of the over the top violence and the playful attitude the whole movie had.
RIDDICK
And now second to last to finish off this week of news, here's a new picture of Vin Diesel from the now in post-production sequel that comes out next year. Can not wait for this one!
TOTAL RECALL
And for the finale this week, the new trailer for Total Recall came out, and this one caught my attention quickly. And no it's not because of the three breasted hooker, but due to the fact that it might actually have more going for it than action and might get to the true heart of the original story.

NEWS ROUNDUP Ver 3
PROMETHEUS
It wouldn't be a week if I didn't have some Prometheus news it seems. This one is just a rumor still at the moment, but we might just get to see a very familiar face in the film at some point. I'll believe once I see it though. Below is also a short video from the film of the Prometheus landing. It's not much but it's so beautifully shot and put together.
GRIMM
In a bit of good news, NBC has decided to give the slow starting yet finally getting interesting series about a hunter of myths that's also a police detective a second season.
ONCE UPON A TIME
Another interesting series that premiered last year that was on the bubble of being cancelled. Well I'm happy to say that this also was renewed for another season. After this past weekend's season final I really can't wait till the next season starts as it hinted at a much larger scale than what the first season was. A third season is going to be a tougher sale I think.
THE RIVER
This one I pretty much figured would be cancelled and it pretty much looks like it is.
FRINGE
JeNee and I were on a trip with a couple of friends when we were showed an episode of Fringe and I fell in love with it then and there. And it looks like Fox likes the viewers of the multi-universe series enough to give it a 13 episode final season. Thank you for not screwing this series like you did Firefly!
ALCATRAZ
Then Fox goes and does something that makes no sense afterward and cancels one of the most interesting time drama I've seen since Life On Mars was on ABC. Even worse for this one is that the season ended on a cliffhanger.
SUPERNATURAL
Coming back for an eighth season is the Winchester brothers. Only thing I have to say to this is "Good".
HAVEN
The missing SyFy series will be back finally in the fall after a extended time off. If you haven't watched this yet, it's a must watch.
DARKCHYLDE
And in movie news also, the Wildstorm comic series from the 90's that was supposedly being turned into a film, might still be made (maybe, yet I'm not holding my breath for this to come to fruition). To see test footage that was shot for the film just look below. The reason why this is interesting is due to who might be directing the film which the poster gives away.

NEWS ROUNDUP Ver 2
BATTLE ANGEL VS. AVATAR
James Cameron has confirmed that Battle Angel Alita is still on his slate of feature films to make. Yet how long this is going to take as Cameron has said that he's only going to concentrate on the Avatar sequels, two confirmed by him with a possible fourth, is anybody's guess when it will get made.
KICK ASS
With Universal Pictures looking for a franchise it looks like a Kick-Ass sequel might just be in the works, minus Mathew Vaughn from the director's chair. If it is green lit, production could start as early as this fall.
THE AVENGERS
Well this is a no shit Sherlock, everyone saw that one coming news. Disney and Marvel are putting The Avengers 2 into pre-production as soon as possible. Though the film wouldn't come out until at least till 2015. This will give time for
The Captain America sequel
Iron Man 3
A third Hulk film
Thor 2
A possible Shield movie
and the wanted by me, Edgar Wright's Irredeemable Ant-Man film to come out.
THE WALKING DEAD
Creator Robert Kirkman talked a little bit about season 3 of the show recently saying that the prison is one of the most amazing set pieces done so far for the series. He also hinted the origin of the sword Michonne carries and uses will be told.
THE DARK TOWER
Ron Howard twitted recently that he was in a story meeting for the much wanted film. Though he did say there is no time table yet for it.
PROMETHEUS
I can't end this without a small but happy Prometheus news tid-bit. The rating for the film is "R". All I can say is thankfully someone got smart in Hollywood and let this one be what it should!

STEPHEN KING ON THE ECONOMY
Stephen King has just published a piece for the Daily Beast about the economy and it is a fun piece that hits the right notes as well as makes very valid points.
One quote from the article is:
"I’ve known rich people, and why not, since I’m one of them? The majority would rather douse their dicks with lighter fluid, strike a match, and dance around singing “Disco Inferno” than pay one more cent in taxes to Uncle Sugar."

GAIMAN INTERVIEWS KING
Anyone that likes really likes horror usually reads. I don't mean just blog posts and reviews, like I do, though please keep reading it makes me happy, but I mean novels and books, though comics count as well (that's really how I learned to read).
Well just recently UK Sunday Times Magazine ran an article by Neil Gaiman who had the luck (to me) to interview Stephen King and talk about multiple point of interest, though a good portion was about about King's recent and upcoming works, The Wind Through The Keyhole, a supplement to the Dark Tower book series which the next one is released on the 24th of this month (and yes, I will be picking it up that day).
I won't spend too much time boring you as I'll post the link to the article at the bottom of this as Gaiman is a much better writer than I am, and more entertaining. What I will do is just put down some talking points from the article.
1. King is working on a novel called JOYLAND which is about a serial killer in a amusement park
2. DR. SLEEP which is the sequel to THE SHINING is done
3. King says his son Joe Hill could easily finish any book he starts writing if he were to die
Anyway, the link is right below this line, so have fun!

TWO QUICK BITS
I just have to mention two really cool things.
First is the site for the A&E's adaptation for Stephen King's Bag Of Bones mini-series starring Pierce Brosnan. As a lot of my friends know I love Stephen King's fictional works, so much so that I'm trying to collect all of his books in first print hardcover edition. Don't think I'll actually get them all, but it's a nice goal. And if anyone wants to sell a copy of Stephen King's The Colorado Kid for somewhat cheap, just get in touch with me! But anyway the site site is kinda creepy and has the right amount of mystery to it to make you want to know what's going on. Let's just hope they keep the connection to the dark series in there! The link is below for the site!
Bag Of Bones
And the last one is there's a new Sam short out that is just perfect for the outcast in all of us that wanted a friend when we were younger but no one could be bothered. Love it! The video is below!
